Chapter twenty

Sienna

‘He’s gone.’

Leo doesn’t need to tell me this. I heard every word of the exchange between Owen and Leo and I’ve listened to Owen’s fists pounding the door for the last five minutes before going quiet.

When Owen arrived, hearing him outside made me wobble. It reminded me how much I love the sound of his voice and all the dreams I had for our future. He’s the man I married; I should have let him in. Yet witnessing him turn so violent so quickly shook me. I’ve never seen him so angry and, quaking in the hallway while he batters the door, I woke up to the possibility there could be another side to my husband that he’s only just starting to reveal.

‘Why don’t you go and rest in one of the bedrooms, you’ve had a draining morning and a nasty shock. I’ll get some food for you.’ Leo guides me upstairs.

‘No, I couldn’t eat anything.’

‘Okay, well while that nutcase has been carrying on out there—’

‘Leo, he’s still my husband!’

Leo pulls a face. ‘I’ve tried getting through to security and there’s no answer. The phone connectivity is low. So I need to go and find them and I’m going to send an alert out via the security room. I’m not taking any chances where your safety is concerned. The police will need to get involved as well. I’m sure Astrid’s death is going to result in a murder investigation.’

I step into one of the upstairs rooms and head straight to the window. There’s no sign of Owen out there, so he must’ve given up and left. I feel a little disheartened that he went away so soon. My emotions are all over the place, I don’t know what to think or feel. My world feels as though it’s been tipped upside down.

‘I’m also going to need to inform your father.’

‘Oh!’ My hands fly to my face. ‘Daddy is going to go mental!’

Leo nods gravely. ‘We’re going to need to try and contain this. If the competition gets hold of this news they’ll have a field day. I can see the headlines now. They won’t go easy on your father if there’s been a murder on his private island.’

I bite my lip. I’ve been so fixated on what’s happening now that my father’s reaction and the potential consequences hadn’t occurred to me.

‘If Owen is involved in some way that’s going to make things more difficult.’

I cringe at this. My father is suspicious enough of Owen as it is. If he has any reason to doubt him over what’s occurred on the island, then he won’t hesitate to do whatever it takes to ensure Owen is punished.

‘We don't know for certain that it's Owen though…’ My thoughts keep going back and forth on this. I should be more loyal to him. After all, don’t they say innocent until proven guilty? And now I’m in safe surroundings and I’ve calmed down, I can put things in perspective a bit more. Owen is gentle, kind and sweet.
